Opener Speech: Obesity
Goodmorning audience, my name is Helenah Chaplin. Today I will be briefly opening a speech with you to inform about our making a difference project on ‘Obesity’. As a part of our ‘Making a Difference’ project,we chose to research this topic, because we felt like we could make a difference on this growing problem around the nation and even in our school. Statistically, 35% of U.S adults and approximately, 17% of adolescents ages 12-19 years of age are obese. Sounds like these percentages should be at a lower rate, doesn't it? Dr.Seuss stated, “If you have brains in your head, you have feet in your shoes, you can steer yourself in any direction you choose!” This quotes means it’s your choice to make the difference. If you really want to make the change, just know that you could do it! Why are most kids obese? Well, a lot of people have said that if you go to Mcdonald’s, a burger is only ninety-nine cent, but if you go to Subway for a salad, it's seven dollars and fifty cents. Which one would you choose? The burger or the salad? Most would say the burger, because they're pulling out no more than a dollar out of their pocket for a juicy burger, vice verses a ten dollar bill for a dry, nasty salad. Would you like to be the person to be working at Mcdonald's, flipping burgers and taking people's orders for the rest of your life? If this isn't what you want to do, then make the difference.
Back in 2014, I had a relative that was overweight and also had other health issues. Anything that looked good to her, she ate it. The girl was concerned about her weight, but she wasn't as concerned as her mother was. When she went in for a regular doctor visit, her doctor told her that she needed to lose weight or either she was going to be on a lot of medication and possibly die. After that, she thought about it and she decided to make the difference. Up to this day, she is healthy and she has lost most of the weight. She chooses her meals wisely and she is very active. The moral from this story that I want to leave with you is to care about the choices that you make and make them wisely. After hearing our speech, we hope that you consider to take this presentation very seriously, learn something from it, and not only gain something out of it, but believe that you can make a difference out of it. We will now transition over to Jamilett who will be speaking with you on our data and surveys.
